Biosolids Use in Soil Fabrication and Landfill Closure

Client:
Columbia Shuswap Regional District

SYLVIS, together with Sperling Hansen Associates, prepared a closure plan for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s (CSRD) Skimikin Landfill, located near Tappen, British Columbia. The plan identified the use of a biosolids soil product in the landfill closure.

SYLVIS worked in partnership with the CSRD, the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD), Sperling Hansen Associates and Hoban Contractors in the development and fabrication of a biosolids soil product for use in vegetation establishment. SYLVIS completed consultation activities with local stakeholders and the media to promote education and awareness of biosolids use at the landfill. Project activities included developing the optimum soil formulation using the local feedstock materials and GVRD biosolids, preparing tender documents for the soil fabrication, obtaining the necessary regulatory authorizations and authoring a Land Application Plan for soil use. SYLVIS prepared the seeding and planting plan, and completed the required quality assurance and quality control monitoring and inspections, including soil quality, placement and decommissioning of the mixing site.

This project involved an intricate coordination of activities between the different partners to ensure that project objectives were met. Our understanding of the project requirements and necessary management activities ensured the successful completion of this project to the satisfaction of all participants.
