The City of Prince George generates approximately 3,000 cubic meters (m3) of biosolids annually at the Lansdowne Wastewater Treatment Centre.  Historically, the biosolids were used primarily for agricultural applications however the historical management options were no longer feasible and SYLVIS was retained by the City to investigate immediate and long term options for biosolids management.

In developing a management plan for the City’s biosolids, SYLVIS considered several factors which are of paramount importance in development of a successful biosolids management program including the regulatory environment, stakeholder perception, program management, environmental protection and cost.  Consideration of each of these factors provides the foundation upon which a successful biosolids program can be built.

Opportunities were assessed in agriculture, woodlots and private forest land fertilization, land reclamation and development of value-added products.  Recommendations for proceeding with long-term biosolids management focused on establishing new application opportunities and developing at least one opportunity that was capable of accommodating five years or more of the City’s biosolids production. 

In recommending biosolids management options, SYLVIS considered program diversity, long-term security, development and maintenance of key stakeholder relationships, and adaptability to changing conditions.

Completion of the biosolids management strategy has provided the City of Prince George with flexibility and contingency that is crucial to the continued success of the City’s biosolids management program.  This proactive approach also promoted long-term planning, will save time and money for the City in the long term and will ensure that the City’s goals for beneficial biosolids management are met.
