The City of Saskatoon operates the Biosolids Handling Facility that receives liquid biosolids from the wastewater treatment plant anerobic digesters. Since 2002, the City of Saskatoon has applied these biosolids onto nearby agricultural lands through subsurface injection.

The City of Saskatoon’s liquid biosolids to farmland program operates on a biannual basis. Through spring and fall application programs approximately 115,000 cubic metres of liquid biosolids are applied to fertilize 500 hectares of agricultural land each year. SYLVIS provides Qualified Professional consulting services to the City to ensure the biosolids are managed in accordance with the Water Security Agency EPB 296 Land Application of Municipal Sewage Sludge Guidelines. These services include preparing biosolids liquid injection operating plans, field surveying, application rate determination, on-site supervision, and annual reporting to Saskatchewan Water Security Agency. SYLVIS also worked with the City of Saskatoon to provide guidance on policy updates to the EPB 296 Land Application of Municipal Sewage Sludge Guidelines.

The program utilizes 100% of the City of Saskatoon’s biosolids to provide agricultural landowners with nutrients suited to their cropping and soil requirements.
