Olivia Hester
Environmental Technician, New Westminster

We are pleased to introduce you to Olivia Hester, BSc, BIT.

Olivia Hester started her career at SYLVIS in September 2019 as an Environmental Technician. She graduated earlier that year from the University of British Columbia (UBC) with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science. Olivia came to SYLVIS with a diverse background in the environmental sector as a result of her time in the UBC Science Co-op program. She spent a summer working in integrated pest management on potato fields in Southern BC; she worked with two Agriculture and Agri-food Canada laboratories, assisting with research in apiculture and nitrogen budgets on dairy farms; and, she assisted a UBC Master’s candidate in studying the effects of logging on greenhouse gas emissions in riparian zones.

As a new member of the SYLVIS team, Olivia has provided support to multiple operational and consulting projects. She has assisted in conducting bench-scale soil fabrication mixes for generators seeking beneficial uses for their residuals. She also spends time in the field, monitoring the quality of landfill leachate that passes through a soil-plant treatment system at Ecowaste Industries in Richmond, BC. Olivia is working to obtain her pesticide applicator’s license in Spring 2020 and is learning to create maps using ArcGIS.

When she is not at work, Olivia loves to hike through BC’s beautiful forests, spend time with her newly adopted cat, and watch the latest movies at the local cinema.
