Haylea Van Vaals
Environmental Technician, New Westminster

We are pleased to introduce you to Haylea Van Vaals.

Haylea graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Science in Geography in 2019 and started her career with SYLVIS as an Environmental Technician soon after. While obtaining her degree, she completed 5 cooperative work terms focusing on water resource management, energy and emissions inventory, water quality monitoring, invasive species management, and environmental outreach. Haylea quickly developed a passion for waste management during her education which lead to her interest in residuals management with SYLVIS.

At SYLVIS, Haylea plays a key role in operations support for the landfill leachate treatment programs at Ecowaste Industries in Richmond, BC. Her primary responsibilities comprise of soil, water and vegetation sampling, invasive species management, and maintenance and installation of leachate treatment systems.

Beyond Ecowaste, Haylea provides technical support for research trials focusing on phosphorus binding using water treatment residuals (WTR). This support includes conducting soil sampling, data collection, trail set-up, and soil-WTR mixing in the lab. Haylea also uses her previous training with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to assist with map production for several projects using ArcGIS.

Haylea enjoys spending her time getting outside and planning adventures locally and abroad. Most weekends she can be seen hiking local mountains or catching a wave on Vancouver Islands West coast.
