Update on the OMRR Review

Thursday, April 27, 2017

In April 2016, the BC Ministry of Environment (MoE) announced a review of the Organic Matter Recycling Regulation (OMRR).  To date, this review has consisted of a literature review of the biosolids land application risks, the first phase of a biosolids/compost and soil sampling and analysis project at biosolids/compost fertilization sites, and a 2016 Intentions Paper proposing initial changes to the regulation.

The MoE has released an update on the OMRR Regulation review.  Based on the feedback received thus far, the Ministry will be conducting a follow-up Intentions Paper which is anticipated to be released the summer of 2017.

The MoE has also provided an update on the scientific review study.  Phase two of the sampling project, which includes sampling of biosolids from two wastewater treatment plants, is underway.  In addition, the first phase of a wildlife risk assessment is underway.  Results from both the sampling project and wildlife risk assessment are anticipated for the summer of 2017.
