Showcasing Innovative Reclamation with Lehigh Hanson
SYLVIS was thrilled to participate for the second time in the recent Lehigh Hanson - Ocean Concrete Annual Open House at their site on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC. SYLVites Michael Jeffery and Sarah Carlson were happy to be a part of the Environment & Sustainability booth, alongside Lehigh Hanson’s Environment Manager Mat Kavanagh. Together with Mat, SYLVIS engaged with members of the public to discuss the link between SYLVIS’s role in reclamation at Lehigh Hanson’s Sechelt Sand and Gravel Mine using residuals including biosolids and how this integrates into the aggregate feedstocks used at the Ocean Concrete site.
Thanks to some excellent weather, the Open House saw hundreds of local residents and visitors attend this family fun event. 2019 saw an industrial sandbox filled with toys, opportunities for kids to get their faces painted, a concert put on by the Vancouver Firefighters band, and the chance to interact with some exotic animals via the Earth Rangers. SYLVIS added to the fun events on site with an activity focused on demonstrating the components of a healthy soil to kids (and adults alike!). SYLVIS is proud to have been included in 2019’s Open House and we look forward to the 100th anniversary of Ocean Concrete’s residence at the site in 2020.
