Ecowaste Landfill and Lehigh Hanson Open Houses

Wednesday, October 2, 2019

Educating and increasing awareness within the communities we work in is part of SYLVIS’s core values. Each year, SYLVIS is invited to participate in open houses put on by Lehigh Hanson Materials Sechelt Mine and Ecowaste Landfill. These open houses provide an opportunity for community members to learn about and get an up-close view of their operations.

SYLVIS participated at Ecowaste Landfill’s 8th Annual Open House in Richmond, BC. SYLVIS provided displays, educational activities, and posters on our work at the landfill. Several attendees tested their plant identification skills with our educational activity that highlighted invasive species that SYLVIS and Ecowaste are working to control within the landfill. A fully operational model of the Polishing Wetland captured attendee’s attention and allowed guests to get a hands-on look at one type of biological leachate treatment SYLVIS is utilizing at Ecowaste. A hay wagon tour throughout the landfill, BBQ, recycling games, and rock truck rides completed this open house.

SYLVIS was invited to contribute in Lehigh Hanson Materials Sand and Gravel Mine’s 25th Annual Open House in Sechelt, BC. This year SYLVIS’s display showcased invasive species management at the mine by having kids participate as plant detectives and identify local invasive species. SYLVIS also showcased our environmental monitoring work that is conducted on an ongoing basis at the mine. The popular event saw close to 1,300 people attend despite the rainy weather.

We would like to thank Ecowaste and Lehigh Hanson Materials for inviting us to participate in this year’s open houses and we look forward to next year’s events!
