Climate Smart…The results are in!

The results are in…We reduced our carbon emissions!  Good news in and of itself but even better considering we increased our full-time staff by more than 10% and opened a new office in Calgary, Alberta!

A bit of background…
SYLVIS is a Climate Smart company.  We voluntarily participate in the Climate Smart program which provides training and web-based software to calculate our carbon emissions.  SYLVIS’s Green Team works closely with our Climate Smart Advisor to calculate our emissions and develop plans for reduction.

In 2012, we completed our baseline emissions inventory and developed a number of initiatives designed to reduce our emissions.  In 2013 we implemented these initiatives and are a pleased by the results.  Recently, we completed our 2013 carbon inventory and saw a 3% reduction in our total carbon emissions!  This reduction comes after a year of significant growth in the company.

Some of our reduction strategies include:

• promoting alternative transportation through transit subsidies, on-site bike storage and laundry and shower facilities
• traveling smarter through advance planning (multi-purpose, multi-person trips) and use of hybrid vehicles  
• reducing the number of garbage cans and increasing the number of recycling streams: glass, metal, plastics, paper, organics

We are pleased with our results and look forward to developing and implementing new strategies in 2014.
