(Seasonal, Full Time)  SYLVIS has an immediate opening for a Seasonal Technical Assistant to join our team in Calgary, Alberta. We are looking for a safety inclined, energetic, and proactive team player. Some key qualities include a passion for the environment, field experience, and strong communication skills.

What will our Technical Assistant do?

You will work with our team of professionals out of our Calgary, AB office. You will assist in implementing our operational project requirements in both the field (primarily) and our office.  You are a self-starter, enthusiastic, and a contributor in dynamic environments, working equally well to accomplish specific tasks either alone or in a team.  You are known for your organization, work ethic and can-do attitude.

In this position you will perform the following:

  • Conduct environmental monitoring within willow plantations including plant growth assessments, recording field data, and maintaining logs of site observations, weather
  • Conduct vegetation management activities such as weed trimming
  • Perform general labour activities
  • Assist with supervising biosolids hauling activities
  • Clean sampling and field equipment
  • Perform data entry
  • Assist with other various administrative and office tasks
  • Adhere to the safety system requirements at all times
  • Undertake other work appropriate to the position as directed by the Project Managers

What do you need to succeed in this role?

  • Are working towards or have a technical diploma or degree in environmental studies, horticulture, biology, or forestry
  • Work well as part of a team and independently
  • Are physically fit and able to complete repetitive tasks such as vegetation maintenance
  • Have experience operating equipment such as gas-powered trimmers, mowers, and tractors
  • Have experience driving in off-road conditions and pulling a trailer or willingness to be trained
  • Have experience in vegetation identification and making field assessments with a high degree of attention to detail, including taking detailed field notes
  • Have a valid AB Driver’s License
  • Have your own means of transportation to commute to the office and field sites
  • Experience working with organic residuals such as manure, biosolids, or compost is an asset
