Topsoil Mixing at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre

Client:
Comox Valley Regional District

In 2015, the Comox Valley Regional District engaged Wacor Holdings to construct the landfill closure system at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre. SYLVIS, having completed many landfill closure soil mixing projects in BC, was retained by Wacor to provide technical and qualified professional support for fabrication of a topsoil for use as the landfill cover.

Despite project challenges which included the addition of new feedstocks following project initiation as well as limitations on the quality and quantity of those feedstocks, SYLVIS designed a mix ratio which achieved the stated soil quality criteria and maximized the benefits of the available feedstocks. SYLVIS then provided ongoing assessment and QA/QC of the topsoil as it was mixed. The recommended mix ratio, the results of the QA/QC program, and context for observations and recommendations were provided by letter and technical memorandum.

SYLVIS was responsive to our client’s needs in a changing project atmosphere and took great care to understand the situation and provide technical advice that was relevant, flexible, and based on data and agrological principles. The fabricated soils designed by SYLVIS provided a practical solution for on-site feedstock and supported the achievement of land end-use and closure goals.
